"With painting, printmaking, fiber and ceramics as their mediums, five new members have joined the oldest art cooperative on the west coast. Gallery 114 welcomes a cohort of women artists, featured in the upcoming show, First Look, opening on Feb 5. In December 2025 Gallery 114 celebrated 35 years as a cooperative gallery with a celebratory show, 35 Trips Around the Sun. The five new members bring a variety of artistic ideas and perspectives, drawing viewers in for a closer look."
"The artists enjoy exchanging ideas and learning from each other. All agree that Gallery 114 is a place of energy and growth."
""I can see people in their work," painter Kimber Shiroma said. "I can see their personality in their work." Shiroma showed her first painting at age fifteen at a small gallery in Portland. Before art school Shiroma taught herself different styles, a practice she continues. She is trained in the Flemish technique, which starts with a layer of ochre paint. On top of that other colors and details are added. The figures in her work show control over situations. They find courage and navigate uncertainty. "My paintings are a response to all that I feel and fear," Shiroma said. "In them the figures are discerning what to fear and what looks scary and dangerous but isn't; what is worthy of fear and action, and what is not.""
"Dawn-Starr Crowther has a background in photography but now creates paintings with mixed media and monotypes. Her work centers around her experience as a meditation instructor and practitioner. Through her art, Crowther has been exploring the question, "What persists?""
Gallery 114 welcomed five new women members working in painting, printmaking, fiber and ceramics and presents their work in the First Look exhibition opening Feb 5 and on view through February. The gallery celebrated 35 years as a cooperative in December 2025 with a show titled 35 Trips Around the Sun. The new members—Dawn-Starr Crowther, Angela Riggs, Kimber Shiroma, Margaret Strother, and Barbara Weiss—bring varied artistic ideas and perspectives. The artists exchange ideas, learn from one another, and describe Gallery 114 as a place of energy and growth. Several members incorporate mixed media and thematic exploration of fear, persistence, and presence.
