Misty Copeland concluded a 25-year tenure at American Ballet Theatre with a final performance at ABT's fall gala at Lincoln Center on Oct. 22. She announced her retirement in June and described the timing as the right moment to move to the next stage. Copeland founded the after-school program Be Bold to make ballet more accessible and affordable for young kids of color in New York City. Celebrities including Oprah Winfrey and Debbie Allen praised her impact on ballet and representation. Copeland said she will continue promoting diversity and that retirement may not end her dancing.
