Mataaho Collective
Briefly

Mataaho Collective, a group of four Māori women from New Zealand, garnered the Golden Lion award at the 2024 Venice Biennale for their installation, Takapau. This recognition reflects their dedication to Māori weaving practices, traditionally associated with women, and illustrates the connectivity intrinsic to Te Ao Māori—spanning life, death, and myth. Utilizing both modern and traditional materials, their current work, Hautāmiro, incorporates muka fiber and local wool to express Māori culture, while also commenting on the historical impact of European colonization.
Mataaho Collective's win at the Venice Biennale signifies a deep reverence for Māori weaving practices and cultural storytelling through contemporary installation art.
Their installations, specifically Takapau, highlight the integration of modern materials while paying homage to the ancestral weaving techniques foundational to the Māori worldview.
