Keeping the doctor away! Clue perfumey asks 29 artists to draw an apple
"We wanted the final set of drawings to feel truly varied and to represent a mix of styles, voices, and perspectives,"
"it almost sparkles on the page!"
"She worked with Saul Bass and Charles Eames during her career, and she has a beautiful series of typographic fruit drawings made in 1967,"
"I found them while researching and asked if she might create one of an apple more than fifty years later. I may have actually pulled her out of retirement for this project!"
Laura and Caleb invited 29 artists to interpret an apple to match a multilayered scent they wanted to create. The resulting set of drawings presents wide variation in focus and technique, including close-ups of mottled skin, emphasis on woody stems, and enhancement of bulbous forms. Techniques span digital dots, ethereal airbrush, collage, and swift charcoal lines. Collaborators include friends, established designers, family members, and a child who made an apple from ice lolly sticks and pipe cleaners. Gay Reineck contributed a typographic fruit drawing decades after her 1967 series.
