Jordan Poorman Cocker
Briefly

In 2023, Jordan Poorman Cocker, from the Kiowa Tribe and Kingdom of Tonga, became the first full-time curator of Indigenous art at Crystal Bridges Museum in Arkansas. Her exhibition, "American Sunrise: Indigenous Art at Crystal Bridges," features over 30 artists and highlights Indigenous perspectives beyond colonial frameworks. Poorman Cocker emphasizes continuity and contemporary narratives in Indigenous art. As a traditional Kiowa artist, she believes in curation as a dialogue between art and its context, rooted in Indigenous knowledge and place-based understanding, challenging conventional museum practices.
Curating is a means of facilitating a meaningful dialogue between art and the world. As an Indigenous person, I often begin the process of curation with a place-based lens.
