"Through 'Bedayat,' we are presenting a comprehensive and research-driven account of Saudi Modern art. Through archival study, pioneering artworks, and firsthand narratives, we are preserving the foundations of our Modern art movement for future generations. This project is both a tribute to our early artists and a lasting cultural legacy that will continue to inform and inspire audiences across the Kingdom and beyond."
"Beginning in the mid-20th century, the art scene in Saudi Arabia underwent an immense amount of change and transformation, together heralding a new creative foundation for subsequent generations of Saudi artists to tap. The experimental and pioneering work being done in the 20th century in Saudi Arabia is demonstrated through the wide range of mediums exhibited, including paintings and sculpture, works on paper and archival materials, much of which has never been on view to the public before."
The National Museum of Saudi Arabia presents "Bedayat: Beginning of Saudi Art Movement," a major survey exhibition tracing Saudi art's transformation from the mid-20th century onward. Curated by Qaswra Hafez, the exhibition focuses on artists working between the 1960s and 1980s. The project involved extensive research by the Visual Arts Commission, including over 80 site visits, 120 artist profiles from 50 interviews, and consultation with renowned advisors. The exhibition features diverse mediums including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and archival materials, many displayed publicly for the first time. The research combines academic expertise with firsthand accounts from artists and key figures, illuminating this artistically revolutionary period and preserving the foundations of Saudi modern art for future generations.
