"Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen share an interest in memories and produce sculptural pieces that are adventurous and experimental. Their works invite viewers to engage with their art while exploring their large installations. Both artists use textiles and discarded domestic objects as basic materials in their work, which, along with the emotional undertones of the pieces, might remind viewers of the oeuvre of Louise Bourgeois, who also used her art to explore and contain emotional memory and anguish."
"Walking into the large first room of the Hayward Gallery, visitors enter an airport arrivals hall complete with a baggage carousel, airport chairs and trolleys. On closer inspection, International Airport, Terminal 2, and Portable City is an installation including suitcases wrapped in fabric - the one covered in grey felt reminiscent of the work of Joseph Beuys - and containing a series of international cityscapes made from scraps of material."
Two linked shows at the Hayward Gallery present large-scale sculptural installations by Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen that explore memory, domestic materials, and globalisation. Both artists use textiles and discarded household objects, combining emotional undertones with playful, family-friendly elements. Yin Xiuzhen's International Airport, Terminal 2, and Portable City recreates an arrivals hall with a baggage carousel and fabric-wrapped suitcases that contain miniature international cityscapes made from scraps. The exhibition surveys Yin Xiuzhen's thirty-year practice and includes new commissions. Materials such as second-hand clothing, food, household objects and concrete are repurposed to tell collective and personal stories about individual memory and China's industrial role.
