"Born in Utah in 1970, Allen now lives in Tepozlán, Mexico and is known for abstracted, biomorphic sculptures in stone and wood, as well as more surprising, gestural compositions cast in bronze. Though he has never had a major solo museum show, Allen is currently preparing to take over the U.S. pavilion with an exhibition titled "Alma Allen: Call Me the Breeze.""
"Allen told the New York Times that he had been in talks with Perrotin's enterprising founder, Emmanuel Perrotin, since October. The artist's two previous galleries, Mendes Wood DM and Olney Gleason (formerly Kasmin Gallery) had pressured him not to accept the State Department's invitation to represent the U.S. in Venice, he claimed. When he did, they dropped him."
Sculptor Alma Allen, born in Utah in 1970 and now based in Tepozlán, Mexico, has joined the mega-gallery Perrotin as he prepares to represent the United States at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Allen creates abstracted biomorphic sculptures in stone and wood, along with gestural bronze compositions. His Venice pavilion exhibition, titled "Alma Allen: Call Me the Breeze," will be curated by Jeffrey Uslip and organized by the American Arts Conservancy. Allen parted ways with his previous galleries, Mendes Wood DM and Olney Gleason, after accepting the State Department's Biennale invitation, which they reportedly opposed. He began discussions with Perrotin founder Emmanuel Perrotin in October.
