Van Gogh's drawing of the Public Garden in Arles will be auctioned by Sotheby's with an estimate of £2m-£3m. The artwork, which depicts the garden near the artist's Yellow House, is notable for a fingerprint possibly left by Van Gogh himself and a pencil inscription on its reverse referencing its donation for reproduction in 1894. The drawing's personal history includes Van Gogh's correspondence with his brother Theo, making it a significant piece in understanding the artist's personal and creative legacy.
One of this work's surprises is the existence of a fingerprint in the lower-right corner, which Sotheby's specialists have confirmed was made with oil paint.
Most likely the drawing was in his studio in the Yellow House and he touched it while he had paint on his fingers, suggesting a personal connection.
The pencil inscription on the reverse, "Pour Mercredi 19 Juillet", indicates the drawing was lent for a reproduction in 1894, marking its significance.
Vincent had posted the small sketch to his brother Theo on 26 September 1888, folding the drawing in half for mailing, showcasing its history.
