Recent instances, like a MAHA Commission report on children's health, highlighted the dangers of relying on AI for accurate sourcing. Journalists uncovered numerous false citations, untrue summaries, and altogether fake sources allegedly published in scientific journals. Experts emphasize the rising issue of AI 'hallucinations,' where information appears accurate but is fundamentally flawed. This phenomenon is problematic not just in scientific literature but also in various fields, necessitating thorough checks of sources by journalists and the public to maintain integrity in reporting and research.

Journalists, however, quickly found numerous problems with the sources the report used to support their 'evidence,' including links that did not work and summaries of studies that misrepresented the underlying work.
