What is DeepSeek? A boon for marketers and a threat to Big Tech | MarTech
Briefly

DeepSeek, a new open-source AI model from China, is shaking up the industry by providing an affordable alternative to established models like OpenAI's. While costing 95% less and requiring less expensive hardware, it demonstrates that innovation can prevail over expensive technology. Industry analysts warn that the rise of DeepSeek signals a shift towards open-source solutions, prompting rapid advancements in AI. Experts believe that its efficiency could drive significant breakthroughs in reasoning models over the next year, challenging the traditional reliance on costly processing power among competitors.
"DeepSeek came out and is beating the pants off everyone and is literally 1/100th of the cost of OpenAI," said Chris Penn.
"I expect in the next six to 12 months we'll see very, very rapid innovation along the lines of reasoning models because of the work that DeepSeek has done," he said.
"DeepSeek appears to have achieved a breakthrough in resource efficiency-an area that has quickly become the Achilles' Heel of the industry," said Mali Gorantla.
"Companies relying on brute force, pouring unlimited processing power into their solutions, remain vulnerable to scrappier startups and overseas developers who innovate out of necessity."
