"Watermarking technology has to be taken with a grain of salt because it is not so hard for someone with a knowledge of watermarks and AI being able to break it and remove the watermark or manufacture one," he said.
The idea is that applications can highlight to users whether an image is human made or software generated, and if the metadata is stripped out, it can be added back in if there is a match with the image and a cloud database of metadata.
