Ella Stapleton discovered that her professor, Rick Arrowood, used ChatGPT to generate lecture materials despite prohibiting students from using AI in his syllabus. Stapleton filed a formal complaint seeking an $8,000 refund after noting AI-generated errors in her course materials. Northeastern University denied her request. Arrowood later admitted to using AI tools for refining class files and has since become more cautious about his AI usage, indicating a growing trend of AI incorporation in higher education, with significant increases in reported usage among educators from 2023 to 2024.
"He's telling us not to use it and then he's using it himself," Stapleton told The New York Times in a report published on Wednesday.
Arrowood admitted to The New York Times that he put his class files and documents through ChatGPT to refine them. The situation made him approach AI more cautiously.
