South Korea Targets 10,000 GPUs to Boost National AI Computing Power
Briefly

South Korea has announced an ambitious initiative to acquire 10,000 high-performance GPUs by the end of 2025, signaling a strategic move to bolster its AI computing infrastructure amid global competition. This plan includes forming public-private partnerships to enhance services at the upcoming national AI computing center, crucial for AI model development and training. With new U.S. export restrictions on AI chips in place, South Korea and other allied nations are primarily exempt, positioning itself advantageously in the AI landscape while global demand for GPUs surges, dominated by Nvidia's market hold.
"As competition for dominance in the AI industry intensifies, the competitive landscape is shifting from battles between companies to a full-scale rivalry between national innovation ecosystems," South Korea's acting President Choi Sang-mok stated.
The initiative aims to supply the GPUs through public-private partnerships, enabling the country to launch services at its upcoming national AI computing center, expected to serve as a cornerstone for AI model development and training.
This move comes as the United States tightens export regulations on AI chips, with South Korea and 17 allied nations remaining largely exempt from these restrictions.
The demand for GPUs has surged globally due to their critical role in developing sophisticated AI systems, with industry leader Nvidia controlling approximately 80% of the global GPU market.
