"In the same way that society differentiates other appropriate boundaries (R-rated movies, for example) we want to do a similar thing here," Altman wrote on social media platform X."
OpenAI plans to permit ChatGPT to produce erotica for verified adults while imposing new restrictions for teenage users. Sexual content quickly became popular with AI tools after the 2022 surge in AI-generated imagery and text. Early adopters of mature AI encountered legal, societal, and abuse challenges as users sought companionship or titillation from chatbots. Competitors like Musk's Grok already offer flirtatious AI characters. Allowing erotic interactions could provide a new revenue stream for ChatGPT subscriptions, which have so far been pitched primarily for professional use. About 29 million users already use chatbots for romantic or sexual bonding.
