San Jose plans to deploy a generative AI platform enabling its 7,000 employees to create personalized chatbot assistants for automating repetitive administrative tasks. The platform aims to reduce time spent on writing reports, analyzing data, summarizing documents, and supporting software development so employees can focus on higher-order work. Earlier pilots produced measurable gains, including a bus route tool that reduced red-light delays, AI-driven language translation for government web pages, and proactive detection of potholes, graffiti, illegal dumping, and homeless encampments. A road safety pilot identified potholes and trash debris with 97% and 88% accuracy, respectively. San Jose helped found the GovAI Coalition and established multi-track curricula to build AI skills.
