Following the emergence of DeepSeek's R1 AI model, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed mixed sentiments, praising the competitor's cost efficiency while asserting OpenAI's intent to outperform them. Despite a significant market downturn with a $1 trillion loss and fears surrounding costs, Altman stands firm on OpenAI's strategy to prioritize substantial computing power to develop superior AI technologies. He believes that the future will demand extensive AI capabilities and that new models will astonish users, even as DeepSeek’s efficient approach poses a challenge to traditional investment models in AI deployment.
Deepseek's R1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they're able to deliver for the price. We will obviously deliver much better models and also it's legit invigorating to have a new competitor!
But mostly we are excited to continue to execute on our research roadmap and believe more compute is more important now than ever before to succeed at our mission.
The world is going to want to use a LOT of AI, and really be quite amazed by the next-gen models coming.
The winners won't be the ones burning the most compute; they will be those who can efficiently deliver value and innovation.
