OpenAI announced that it was choosing to preview, but not broadly release, text-to-speech realistic voice generator Voice Engine due to 'the potential for synthetic voice misuse.'
'If you have the right audio setup, it's basically a human-caliber voice,' Jeff Harris, a product lead at OpenAI, told Bloomberg.
Voice Engine supports non-verbal individuals across languages and assists in language translation, reading aid, and more, according to OpenAI.
OpenAI emphasized the need to bolster societal resilience against challenges posed by increasingly convincing generative models in their decision to preview, and not release, Voice Engine.
