Sutskever co-led the superalignment team at OpenAI, focusing on ensuring AI follows human intentions even as it gains capabilities, highlighted by the need for new scientific and technical breakthroughs to control superintelligent AI.
Jan Leike, who co-led the superalignment team with Sutskever, also abruptly resigned shortly after Sutskever's departure, while other members of the superalignment team have reportedly left OpenAI in recent months.
In November, Sutskever and other board members tried to oust CEO Sam Altman due to perceived lack of transparency, but reversed the decision after facing backlash. Sutskever had notified Altman of the attempted firing.
