One year in, Business Insider's AI onsite search is boosting engagement
"the percentage hasn't grown that dramatically in a year of use"
"The goal here was to really find a way to build something that promoted journalism, not try and cover it up or paint it over with AI, right? We felt strongly that, when it comes to AI and chatbots, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution,"
"We can do creative things to actually promote the work that our journalists do day-in and day-out - and it worked quite well."
Business Insider launched an AI onsite search in October 2024 that increased click-through to articles by about 50% among users, while overall reader adoption of the search remains around 1%, similar to the prior search tool. AI audio briefings launched in June and have grown consumption by roughly 20% month-over-month. Internal staff use of AI tools rose to an estimated 80–90% from about 70% in May. The organization has developed approximately 200 custom GPTs for specific use cases. The search was designed to promote journalism and avoid replacing or obscuring reporter work.
