Dozens of recently laid-off white-collar workers reported uncertainty about reasons for cuts when performance problems were not cited. Companies are pouring money into AI while cutting jobs, leading some workers to suspect AI-driven displacement and others to attribute layoffs to cost-cutting, pandemic-era overhiring, or organizational restructuring. US employers cited AI for nearly 55,000 planned layoffs last year. Some workers are actively building AI skills; companies seldom directly blame AI publicly.
