Knowing less about AI makes people more open to having it in their lives
Briefly

New research published in the Journal of Marketing indicates that individuals with lower AI literacy are more inclined to embrace artificial intelligence in daily life. This phenomenon, dubbed the 'lower literacy-higher receptivity' link, appears consistent across various demographics and countries. Surveys reveal that those unfamiliar with AI tend to find its capabilities more magical, leading to a greater openness to using AI for tasks traditionally performed by humans. Conversely, those with greater technical knowledge may perceive AI as less enchanting, reducing their enthusiasm for adoption.
People with less knowledge about AI are actually more open to using the technology, which we call the 'lower literacy-higher receptivity' link.
Our analysis reveals that people in nations with lower average AI literacy are more receptive towards AI adoption than those in nations with higher literacy.
The reason behind this link lies in how AI now performs tasks we once thought only humans could do, making it feel almost magical.
Those with less understanding see AI as magical and awe inspiring, which makes them more open to using AI tools.
