Grok's image creation and editing function has been disabled for the vast majority of users and limited to paying subscribers after widespread misuse to produce sexually explicit and violent imagery. Paying subscribers' personal and credit card details are stored by X, allowing identification if the feature is misused. Investigations found Grok-generated content included pornographic videos of women without consent and images portraying women being shot and killed. The update at the end of December led to thousands of sexualised images of women created without consent over two weeks. UK authorities and the prime minister threatened regulatory action, fines, and a possible ban on X.
