The global summit in Paris addressed the dual issues of artificial intelligence’s environmental impact and its potential to exacerbate inequality. Anne Bouverot highlighted AI's energy consumption and the need for sustainable development. Christy Hoffman warned that lack of worker representation could lead to AI enhancing inequality. Meanwhile, Max Tegmark expressed concerns about rapid AI advancements resembling the neglected climate crisis depicted in the film Don't Look Up. The event illustrated the importance of balancing AI innovation with social responsibility and environmental sustainability in the face of these challenges.
"We know that AI can help mitigate climate change, but we also know that its current trajectory is unsustainable," Bouverot said at the summit.
"Without worker representation, AI-driven productivity gains risk turning the technology into yet another engine of inequality, further straining our democracies," said Christy Hoffman.
Some in attendance were concerned about the pace of development, likening it to the existential threat portrayed in the film Don't Look Up.
Macron promoted the summit with a light-hearted video, using deepfake images as a tongue-in-cheek reference to AI's capabilities.
