Duolingo doubles its language offerings with AI-built courses
Briefly

Duolingo has announced the launch of 148 new language courses powered by generative AI, significantly expanding its language offerings. This rapid expansion comes after the platform has faced criticism for replacing contract workers with AI-driven solutions. CEO Luis von Ahn stated that the process of developing the first 100 courses took 12 years, highlighting AI's role in speeding up course creation. The newly released courses will initially focus on beginner levels and open opportunities for various language speakers to learn more options. The company is pivoting to an 'AI-first' model to enhance productivity.
Developing our first 100 courses took about 12 years, and now, in about a year, we're able to create and launch nearly 150 new courses. This is a great example of how generative AI can directly benefit our learners.
This isn't about replacing Duos with AI. It's about removing bottlenecks so we can do more with the outstanding Duos we already have. We want you to focus on creative work and real problems, not repetitive tasks.
