Bowdoin to Devote $50M Gift to AI Learning, Teaching
Briefly

Bowdoin College has received a pioneering $50 million donation from Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, to establish the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity. This historic gift, the largest in the college's 231-year existence, aims to enhance teaching and research in artificial intelligence. It will finance the hiring of 10 new faculty members, expand research and curriculum, and foster campus discussions on the implications of AI. Hastings emphasizes the need for deep thinking about AI as it evolves, highlighting the importance of a liberal arts education in this new era.
This donation seeks to advance Bowdoin's mission of cultivating wisdom for the common good by deepening the College's engagement with one of humanity's most transformative developments: artificial intelligence.
We are thrilled and so grateful to receive this remarkable support from Reed, who shares our conviction that the AI revolution makes the liberal arts and a Bowdoin education more essential to society.
