Disney is investing $1 billion in OpenAI and granting rights for more than 200 characters, including Mickey Mouse, to appear in the Sora AI short-form video app under a three-year agreement with partial exclusivity. The deal excludes rights to likenesses and voices while OpenAI will implement guardrails to restrict misuse and create a safe consumer environment. Disney will receive warrants to buy additional OpenAI equity and may pursue licensing and customer opportunities with OpenAI. User-generated AI content from Sora will be featured on Disney+ to increase engagement with younger viewers. Sora previously drew controversy over realistic generated videos.
