Big tech is flexing its muscle to try and 'water down' California's AI regulation - here's why that's a problem
Briefly

The amendments made to California's AI bill primarily serve to ease the regulatory burden on tech companies, raising concerns over the effectiveness of consumer protections.
Bruna de Castro e Silva stated, 'These amendments not only advance the corporate interests of big tech companies, but also undermine the fundamental principle of accountability in AI governance.'
Senator Scott Wiener acknowledged, 'While the amendments do not reflect 100% of the changes requested by Anthropic... we accepted a number of very reasonable amendments proposed,' indicating a compromise with the tech industry.
The amended bill shifts regulatory power to the Attorney General's office, which now can seek civil penalties only if harm has occurred or there is an imminent threat, diluting enforcement capabilities.
