Baidu has reversed its stance on open-source AI due to the success of DeepSeek, which launched an effective open AI model. CEO Robin Li noted that DeepSeek's virality demonstrated the advantages of open-sourcing models for adoption. Baidu has now decided to make its Ernie 4.5 model open-source by June 30, despite previous beliefs that closed-source models are more powerful. Additionally, the company announced its AI chatbot will be available for free starting April 1, contributing to a surge in its stock value.
One thing we learned from DeepSeek is that open-sourcing the best models can greatly help adoption. When the model is open source, people naturally want to try it out of curiosity, which helps drive broader adoption.
As competition in the chatbot space intensifies, Baidu also announced that it would make its AI chatbot free from April 1.
