Are robotaxis ushering in the 'car tender' era? Lyft's CEO thinks so.
"I think there will be fun things that people are going to be doing in the cars that are not just driving. It's making drinks, it's telling stories, it's being the local guy,"
"We want to make sure, for individuals, that they can continue to participate in this gig economy; it's just that now they can do it in a different way. They don't have to use their time; they can use their physical asset,"
"car tender"
Lyft envisions 'car tenders' in robotaxis to carry luggage, serve drinks, tell stories, and act as local guides while vehicles drive autonomously. A prolonged hybrid period is expected in which human drivers and robotaxis coexist for many years before autonomous systems markedly reduce driver demand. Drivers concerned about displacement could gain alternative income by listing self-driving vehicles on ride-hailing platforms or offering service-oriented roles inside cars. Lyft partners with autonomous-vehicle developers rather than building its own AV technology. The company created a 'driver accomplishment letter' tool to help drivers transition into other service roles.
