Kai Chen, an AI researcher at OpenAI, was recently denied a green card after 12 years in the U.S. This decision has raised concerns among fellow researchers, including Noam Brown, who emphasized the risks to America's AI leadership. Although Chen will continue working remotely from Canada, this situation highlights the challenges faced by foreign talent in the U.S., particularly in light of recent immigration crackdowns. The situation calls for reforms to high-skill immigration policies to retain global talent.
"It's deeply concerning that one of the best AI researchers I've worked with [...] was denied a U.S. green card," wrote Brown. "A Canadian who's lived and contributed here for 12 years now has to leave."
"...until [the] mess hopefully gets sorted out," noted Brown about Chen's situation. "Green cards can be denied for all sorts of reasons, and the decision won't cost Chen her job."
