A recent study reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in the growing counterfeit shopping market, with 28% of consumers utilizing AI tools to find counterfeit goods. The report, 'The Counterfeit Buyer Teardown', indicates that over half of respondents have employed AI in their online shopping experiences. Conducted by OnePoll and Red Points, the study highlights the escalating complexity of counterfeit shopping facilitated by AI, as the prevalence of fraudulent websites is projected to surge by 70% in 2025, making the fight against fakes more urgent than ever.
"As counterfeiters adopt advanced tools like AI, the fight against fakes is becoming more complex and more urgent," said Laura Urquizu, CEO and President of Red Points.
"We're now seeing AI shape both the threat and the solution. In 2024 alone, Red Points detected 4.3 million counterfeit infringements online-an alarming 15% increase year-over-year."
The study noted that fraudulent websites are proliferating, with projections for a 70% year-over-year increase in 2025, signaling a rapidly escalating counterfeit market.
In February 2025, over one quarter of consumers (28%) who purchased counterfeit products used AI tools to assist in their search, highlighting AI's pervasive role.
