AI Assistants Join the Factory Floor
Briefly

The manufacturing of steel ball bearings remains largely unchanged since 1900, although automation has transformed surrounding operations. In Schaeffler's Hamburg factory, steel wire is shaped and honed into precise balls through advanced machinery and testing processes. However, identifying assembly line defects remains challenging due to data from disparate machines. To address this, Schaeffler adopted Microsoft's Factory Operations Agent, a tool utilizing large language models to analyze manufacturing data and pinpoint issues, enhancing efficiency and reducing human intervention.
"The process is driven by a conveyor belt, and, for the most part, it's automatic. The most urgent task for humans is to figure out when things are going wrong."
