Apple reunion beckons for Intel as its stock soars
"All Apple machines used to run on Intel chips. Nowadays, Apple designs its own chips and uses Intel's rival TSMC to manufacture them. That seems set to change in part: the cheapest M chips are also expected to come out of Intel factories in 2027. That was the conclusion on Friday of Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities. The prediction had a major impact over the weekend: Intel's share price climbed 10 percent."
"This blueprint for 18A-P is due to be released in early 2026. Only then will Apple engineers be able to create final designs for their intended processors. Please note: this is a limited order. According to analyst Kuo, TSMC should notice practically nothing of Apple's choice of Intel."
Apple previously used Intel CPUs but now designs its own chips and relies on TSMC for manufacturing. Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the cheapest M chips could be produced at Intel factories in 2027, which sent Intel shares up about 10 percent. Intel's upcoming 18A-P process reportedly showed positive test results for efficiency, addressing the earlier performance gap that prompted Apple and Intel to separate. The 18A-P Process Design Kit is due in early 2026, enabling Apple engineers to finalize chip designs. The initial order is limited, but Intel winning Apple could attract other major customers.
