In response to the ongoing VTA worker strike that has halted bus and light rail services in Silicon Valley, VTA has partnered with Uber to provide daily vouchers worth $5 each for riders. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens as commuters face increased transportation costs. Riders can redeem the vouchers for Uber rides that start and end at VTA stops. Until the strike concludes, this pilot program will continue, with hopes of accommodating transit users during this challenging period.
"There's no way we can just say, 'Ok, we're going to pay for your whole trip,' ... It's just not financially possible for the agency," Hendler Ross said.
"However, we hope that a $5 discount one way and a $5 discount the other way will be at least some help to people," Hendler Ross stated.
"To use the vouchers, the ride has to begin and end at a VTA bus or light rail stop," Henlder Ross explained.
"Members of ATU Local 265 voted 83% to reject VTA's latest offer Monday, and the union and agency were in mediation meetings Tuesday."
