Negotiations between the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 are ongoing, with a labor dispute threatening public transportation services in South Bay. Union members, representing over 1,500 workers, have authorized a strike as VTA's current contract is set to expire. The union is dissatisfied with a proposed 1% annual wage increase and accuses VTA of failing to improve workplace conditions. Residents are advised to prepare for alternative travel options should a strike occur, notably impacting bus and light rail services.
As of Monday, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 were still working to reach a new agreement.
The union represents more than 1,500 workers, including bus drivers, light rail operators and dispatchers.
In a statement last week, the union expressed frustration at an earlier offer, which called for a 1% wage increase per year for three years.
VTA is encouraging residents and businesses to start preparing for alternative travel methods in case of a strike.
