The Rivian R1S has received praise for its performance and luxury, yet one owner, Michael Rauch, faced significant reliability challenges shortly after purchase. After a critical failure of the front electric motor at just 800 miles, and an air conditioning malfunction at 2,000 miles, Rauch's confidence diminished despite positive service experiences. Originally excited to replace a Tesla Model X, the ongoing issues led him to reconsider his EV choice after only 7,000 miles, highlighting potential inconsistencies in ownership experiences with new electric vehicles.
With just 800 miles on the odometer, the R1S had a critical failure of the front electric motor.
The service staff was dynamite, the owner said. They replaced the front motor and, out of an abundance of caution, the rear motor.
With 2,000 miles on the odometer, the air conditioning system failed, which resulted in another tow to a Rivian service center.
Despite the powerful capabilities of the Rivian R1S and R1T, ownership experiences can vary significantly.
