"Not a lot of people know this, but R1 actually came from a design of an R2," Rivian's chief design officer, Jeff Hammoud, shared during a studio tour. This anecdote highlights how the development of Rivian's vehicles often involves experimentation. A design concept from the R2 unexpectedly turned into the successful R1, showcasing the company's flexible and adaptive design process in producing recognizable electric vehicles.
Hammoud noted, "Instead of creating a further shrunken, boxy CUV for its third model, designers ideated on more playful and less predictable shapes." This reflects Rivian's desire to explore beyond traditional vehicle segments, illustrating how design exploration framed the aesthetic direction for their new R3 hatchback.
"I saw the graphic of it, and thought, that's actually really cool, so we scaled it up and made it into the headlight," Hammoud explained about the signature front fascia of Rivian vehicles. This was born from a design accident, which speaks volumes about the creative culture at Rivian that embraces unexpected inspirations.
