Tesla vs. competition: How many BEVs did OEMs sell in the U.S. in 2024?
Briefly

Tesla continues to dominate the U.S. battery-electric vehicle market by a wide margin, having sold more BEVs than all but a few competitors combined. According to early estimates, Cox Automotive recorded that Tesla's sales were substantially higher than those of General Motors and Ford, which ranked second and third, respectively.
Cox Automotive reports indicate that the total BEV sales in the U.S. reached approximately 1.3 million in 2024, representing around 8 percent of the nearly 16 million vehicles sold across all powertrains. Notably, fourth quarter figures showed a significant year-over-year rise, achieving 356,000 EVs sold in the last quarter alone.
As for growth predictions, Cox Automotive anticipates that U.S. EV deliveries could exceed 1.5 million units in 2025, following an increase from approximately 1.2 million in 2023. This growth trajectory underscores the expanding acceptance and adoption of electric vehicles within the U.S. automotive landscape.
Toyota's contribution to BEV sales was relatively modest compared to Tesla, GM, and Ford, with figures mostly stemming from its BZ4X and Lexus RZ models. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Toyota's electrified vehicle offerings predominantly consist of hybrids and plug-in hybrids, with BEVs being a smaller segment of their overall sales.
