In a recent episode of Talking Headways, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen discussed the U.S. Department of Transportation's decision to strip funding from sustainable projects. He emphasized the critical need for safety in transportation, highlighting the alarming death toll from roadway incidents, with over 40,000 fatalities in 2023, including significant numbers from pedestrian and cyclist accidents. Larsen advocates for investing in infrastructure such as sidewalks and separated bike lanes to enhance safety and reduce deaths, urging that prioritizing these safety measures is essential for effective transportation policy.
When we just think about competitive grants and bike and ped infrastructure, I think the focus should be on, sadly, the national epidemic of highway and roadway deaths.
To address this issue of this national epidemic of highway deaths and preventable deaths, it would seem wise to invest in sidewalks to give people a safer place to walk.
