An appellate court has denied the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265's appeal regarding the termination of a strike, reinforcing a prior ruling by Judge Daniel Nishigaya. The union's 17-day strike aimed at better wages and a transparent conflict resolution method disrupted bus and light rail service in the region. Following the court's ruling that the strike violated the union's contract, VTA spokespersons indicated a desire to resume negotiations. The union believes it lost leverage post-ruling, claiming the contract's validity ended prior to the strike.
The appellate court's denial of the writ petition allows VTA to continue to serve our customers. We are hopeful that ATU will return to bargaining.
Union officials argued the contract ended March 3 and that the county's superior courts did not have authority to intervene, as state laws carve out a specific path for labor disputes.
