Jeep is recalling nearly 200,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles globally due to a potential battery fire risk. In the U.S., 154,032 cars are affected, but the fires have occurred while parked and off. Jeep's parent company stated that a remedy is imminent and affected customers will be notified soon.
Currently, the exact cause of the battery fires is unknown, but owners are advised to park outside and away from structures. Jeep emphasizes that a fix is forthcoming, with a likely software update involved.
Last year, a similar recall occurred for 44,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrids after eight fires were reported, all occurring while the vehicles were parked and turned off, with some connected to chargers.
Jeep suggested that the fire risk is reduced when the battery charge level is depleted and urged owners to refrain from recharging their vehicles until a solution is implemented.
