The MTA announced that the implementation of Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) on buses has resulted in increased speed, fewer crashes, and reduced emissions. Buses equipped with these cameras move 5 percent faster, experience 20 percent fewer crashes in dedicated lanes, and emit up to 10 percent less pollution. Notably, specific routes have seen speed boosts of 20 percent due to ACE, showcasing significant improvements in commuter safety and efficiency, despite only a small percentage of city streets featuring bus lanes. The data highlights the overall effectiveness of this initiative in enhancing public transportation.
It's not just speed increases, we're also seeing reductions in collisions. You're getting all those benefits right across the entire route of the bus, which makes our buses that much more faster, accessible and customer loading that much safer.
While the city's 181st Street busway boosted speeds for the BX35 by 20 percent between April 2021 and April 2023, bus speeds jumped another 20 percent with the introduction of camera enforcement to the route in April 2023.
