Research indicates that a significant majority of drivers (72%) would consider switching to electric vehicles (EVs) if they could gain 250 miles of range from just five minutes of charging. BYD recently showcased a technology that could enable this rapid charging. However, concerns exist regarding the potential costs and feasibility of building such a comprehensive fast-charging infrastructure. Paul Burgess from Startline highlights the appeal of convenient fast charging, especially for those unable to install home chargers. Nonetheless, the current capability of UK chargers is far below the requirements of this ideal scenario, indicating a need for substantial investment.
The promise of an electric car that can be powered with the convenience of a petrol equivalent clearly strikes a chord with many potential buyers, our research shows.
We have, of course, yet to see BYD's charging in action and it is comparatively rare to see chargers rated at over 300kW in the UK, never mind the 1,000kW that five-minute charging demands.
