Drivers paying motor tax in instalments paid almost 106m more in extra charges

Social Democrat TD Aidan Farrelly has called for Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien to abolish additional charges for motorists who choose to pay their motor tax in three- or six-monthly instalments. Official figures indicate that between 2022 and 2024, the government earned over €35 million from these surcharges, which can reach 13% for quarterly payments and 11% for biannual ones. O'Brien defended the higher costs, attributing them to increased workload and processing requirements, while also acknowledging the impact on overall motor tax revenue should changes occur.
Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien stated, "Each quarterly renewal of motor tax follows the same administrative procedures as the annual renewal process," justifying higher charges for installment payments.
Farrelly urged the government to abolish higher charges for installment payments, highlighting that motorists paid over €22.7m more last year due to these surcharges.
