In April 2024, Austin reduced its scooter fleet by 2,000 and lowered speed limits as part of its micromobility program. A year later, the city reported significant improvements, with increased trips per vehicle and fewer scooters cluttering the streets. For example, average trips per day rose from 1.21 to 1.36 citywide, and from 1.10 to 1.79 downtown, even as total trips dropped slightly. This suggests that despite a reduction in available scooters, they are being used more effectively, leading to fewer complaints about improperly parked scooters.
"One of the goals with this reduction we did [last April] was hopefully, we would see those numbers increase," Kimbro said, referring to the reduction in the maximum fleet size and the trips per day metrics, respectively. "And we did, citywide," he added.
The data also shows a sharp drop in customer service requests to the city's 3-1-1 system related to improperly parked scooters.
