"We are devastated to learn that a driver hit and killed a 4-year-old boy this morning in Brooklyn. This is every parent's nightmare and it was wholly preventable. Our thoughts are with their family. We must build a New York City that's safe for children - and that means finally implementing Sammy's Law to ensure drivers are moving at a safe 20 mph."
"A speed camera at the intersection of Rockaway Parkway and Linden Boulevard caught 3,600 people speeding last year, the group said, averaging almost 10 drivers a day."
A 4-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run collision on Rockaway Parkway near Linden Boulevard in Brooklyn on March 5. The child ran into a mid-block crosswalk and was struck by a white Ford Explorer SUV traveling northbound on a green light. The driver fled the scene. Transportation Alternatives advocates for lowering the speed limit from 25 to 20 mph using authority granted under Sammy's Law, passed in 2024. Speed cameras at the intersection recorded 3,600 speeding violations last year, averaging nearly 10 daily. The advocacy group emphasizes that lower speeds could prevent such tragedies and create safer streets for children.
