Bay Area traveler says Uber gift cards boosted fare
Briefly

Bay Area resident Rupinder Summan discovered that after loading Uber and Lyft gift cards onto his account for his honeymoon, he experienced higher ride prices than expected. Testing this multiple times, he found that his account charged more for rides compared to his wife's app under identical conditions. Similar experiences were shared online, revealing a potential trend in fluctuating fares when using gift card credits for rides. Notably, others, like travel blogger Gary Leff, have reported unexpected fare increases after applying credits, indicating a broader issue with pricing behavior in ride-hailing services.
Indeed, in online forums throughout the country, some people using San Francisco-based ride-hailing apps have said they see a change in fares after uploading a gift card.
Summan insists that he tested this in the same location, at the same time, for rides headed to the same destination.
When he tested this with a $15 Uber credit after earning it for his frequent travels, he was surprised to see a suspiciously high price offered on Uber.
'I do this frequently, I know what this usually costs me,' he said, referring to the unusual pricing he encountered.
