About one in four U.S. adults, roughly 66 million people, use AI tools or chatbot features to obtain healthcare information. Many use AI to research personal health conditions and to do pre- or post-appointment questions. Over half of users report turning to AI to supplement healthcare experiences before or after seeing a doctor. Many users say the AI tool or chatbot increases confidence when talking with or asking questions of providers. Others report identifying issues earlier or avoiding unnecessary tests and procedures. A smaller group uses AI instead of seeing medical professionals due to cost, access, care quality, time, or embarrassment. Health systems are urged to keep pace and guide responsible use.
