In a thrilling display at the Tirreno-Adriatico third stage, Filippo Ganna attacked solo in the final kilometers amidst rainy conditions, testing his form ahead of Milan-San Remo. Although he was initially caught by Mathieu van der Poel, it was Andrea Vendrame who ultimately clinched the victory. Ganna expressed no regrets about his attempt, highlighting the instinctive nature of racing. Both riders were preparing themselves for future challenges, emphasizing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that exists among elite cyclists, especially in the lead-up to major events.
Both Ganna and Van der Poel were testing their form after six hours of racing in the rain and cold. In 10 days they will clash with Tadej Pogačar and other Classics and sprint stars over the 289km of the season's first Monument, Milan-San Remo.
When you're racing to win, you don't worry about your rivals. I'd have done the same to him. I've got a lot of respect for him but when we're on the bike, it's race on.
Ganna explained, I could have waited for the sprint but when you feel like attacking, you have to follow your instinct and go for it.
Van der Poel had no reply when Andrea Vendrame hit the front and won the sprint. Van der Poel finished 20th at the line before quickly disappearing to his Alpecin-Deceuninck team bus to get warm.
